Ace Hotel New York opened in 2009 in the Breslin Building at 29th and Broadway, in the Flatiron District. The property occupied a 1904 mixed-use building and the Ace transformation kept much of the original architecture intact — exposed brick, original window casements, period detailing — while overlaying the brand's specific design language (mid-century modern furniture, design-pedigree everything, indie aesthetics).

The Ace's broader cultural impact in NYC is more than the hotel itself. The lobby was for years one of Manhattan's de facto coworking spaces, drawing creative-class freelancers who wanted free wifi, good coffee, and a clean spot to work. The Breslin gastropub downstairs (chef April Bloomfield's first solo restaurant) earned a Michelin star and helped define the gastropub category in NYC. The Stumptown coffee location in the lobby helped land third-wave coffee in NYC in the late 2000s.

The 282 rooms range from compact "bunk" rooms (designed for shorter stays at lower price points) to suites with original architectural features (high ceilings, original windows, exposed brick). Common spaces include the John Dory Oyster Bar, John & Sam's restaurant, the Lobby Bar, and the Breslin downstairs.

Rooms typically $300-600/night. Flatiron location is excellent for walking — Madison Square Park is two blocks away, Union Square is six blocks south, Times Square is fifteen minutes walking or two subway stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the bunk rooms a good value?

For shorter stays where you don't need much room, yes — they're designed for compact use and priced significantly below the standard rooms.

What's the lobby scene like?

Active during business hours — Stumptown coffee, lots of laptop-on-couch coworking. Quieter in evenings. The bar gets busy on weekends.

Is the Breslin still good?

Yes — chef April Bloomfield's original property; still consistently well-reviewed.
