The Bronx Zoo opened on its current 265-acre site in 1899 — three years before AMNH expanded to its current building footprint, and a year before the New York City subway broke ground. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which runs the zoo, was founded specifically to operate it; today WCS runs all five NYC zoos plus the New York Aquarium and significant international conservation programs in 60 countries.
The zoo's serious conservation mission distinguishes it from typical city zoos. The 700+ species are housed in immersive habitats rather than cages — the Congo Gorilla Forest (6.5 acres opened in 1999) is the largest gorilla habitat in any zoo and one of the largest single-species exhibits ever built. The African Plains uses moats and visual barriers to put visitors closer to lions, zebras, and giraffes than chain-link fencing would allow. JungleWorld, the indoor Asian rainforest building, recreates an entire ecosystem with 99% humidity year-round.
Plan a full day. The grounds are vast; even with the Wild Asia Monorail and the Bug Carousel, walking time between exhibits is significant. Wear shoes for outdoor terrain. Summer is the obvious peak; winter visits get the zoo dramatically quieter (with most outdoor exhibits still operating — the animals are largely cold-adapted).
Total Experience tickets include access to all major exhibits, the monorail, and the carousel. General admission covers the perimeter and most outdoor areas. Wednesdays are pay-what-you-wish for general admission only (Total Experience requires separate ticket).

How do I get to the Bronx Zoo?
Subway 2 or 5 to Pelham Parkway, then walk 10 min to the Bronxdale entrance. Or BxM11 express bus from Midtown. ~50-60 min from Midtown either way.
What's the difference between General and Total Experience tickets?
General admission covers most outdoor exhibits and walking grounds. Total Experience adds Congo Gorilla Forest, Wild Asia Monorail, Children's Zoo, Bug Carousel, and other paid attractions. Total is worth it if you'll do more than two add-ons.
Is the zoo kid-friendly?
Among the strongest kid attractions in NYC. Strollers welcome. The Children's Zoo is a separate kid-focused area within the grounds.
Is it open year-round?
Yes. Outdoor exhibits run all year (most animals are cold-adapted). Some indoor exhibits like JungleWorld are warm and humid all year — useful winter backup.
