The New York Aquarium opened in 1896 inside Castle Garden in Battery Park, making it the oldest continuously operating aquarium in the United States. After being displaced multiple times for park renovations, it found its permanent Coney Island home in 1957 — directly on the boardwalk, with views of the Atlantic that reinforce the marine-life focus.
The headline experience is Ocean Wonders: Sharks!, a 57,000-square-foot expansion opened in 2018. The 500,000-gallon main tank holds 18 species of sharks and rays in a 360-degree viewing environment that's among the most immersive in any US aquarium. Beyond the sharks, the older Conservation Hall houses sea otters, the Sea Cliffs exhibit features California sea lions and Pacific walruses, and the Glover's Reef tank reproduces a Caribbean coral system.
The Coney Island setting is half the experience. The boardwalk runs directly past the aquarium's back entrance. Luna Park (Cyclone roller coaster, the Wonder Wheel) is two blocks away — open seasonally (typically April through October). The original Nathan's Hot Dogs at Stillwell Avenue is a four-block walk and an essential NYC food milestone. The Atlantic Ocean is across the boardwalk for beach access in summer.
Plan a full day if combining with the boardwalk. Aquarium-only is 3-4 hours. Summer is the obvious peak; winter visits get the aquarium nearly empty.
